R3 is pleased to unveil Project RACOON: RAdio COntrolled ONboard Systems for Avionics. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 947485. At 2.14 million EUR – a significant amount for a startup – the two-year-long grant will also allow R3 to hire additional staff and expand onsite support and outreach operations around the world.
The WAIC (Wireless Avionics Intra-Communications) consortium includes aerospace leaders such as Airbus, Lufthansa Technik and Thales. Its goal is to replace wired onboard systems where possible with wireless controls.
Project RACOON is R3’s first foray into avionics under WAIC. The wireless technology R3 plans to develop will greatly cut down on aircraft weight, in turn reducing fuel consumption and C02 emissions. It will also simplify engineering and repairs, upgrade onboard status sensors and add an extra layer of control redundancy in the event of accidents. Project RACOON represents a huge challenge for R3 in terms of software development, safety and conformance testing and engineering, necessitating the extra personnel and resources enabled by Horizon 2020’s grant.
Horizon 2020 is the financial arm of Innovation Union, a flagship Europe 2020 initiative with the goal of creating high-quality jobs, promoting innovation and increasing Europe’s global competitiveness. As part of the agreement Arrow Electronics will soon distribute the EchoRing Rollout Kit. The Kit will allow clients to test EchoRing’s performance in their own production environments, substituting wired Ethernet connections with the Kit’s wireless stations.
About R3: Reliable Realtime Radio Communications GmbH
Founded in 2015, R3 – Reliable Realtime Radio Communications GmbH (R3) develops a powerful wireless solution to replace wired control networks. Our unique radio-based network EchoRing makes cable-like wireless performance possible for the first time; real-time (1ms) latency combined with high reliability and coverage (PERS up to 10-9). R3 collaborates with talented investors such as Creathor Ventures and IBB Beteiligungsgesellschaft and with well-known clients such as Liebherr, BMW and Kuka.
